The topic og this year’s annual FUNLight event was 5G mobile networks and featured a lot of myth busting. After an introduction of the DTU-Lys student chapter, more than 50 bachelor and master students were listening to “5G – will mobile networks make the optical fibre obsolete?” as presented by Prof. Lars Dittmann, head of the Networks group at DTU Fotonik.

5G is very hyped at the moment, and many media outlets would let you believe that 5G will solve all network-related problems. Lars Dittmann spent his talk deflating the hype and introducing facts to the 5G discussion. He introduced to the audience the concept of network slicing, which is one of the key benefits of 5G networks: The ability to create several virtual networks using the same network, allowing 5G networks to service a wide range of applications with different requirements for a network using the same hardware.

After the presentation, students were offered free pizza and drinks in the Line of Light, where many of them had a pleasant evening further discussing the networks of the future.

We thank Lars Dittmann for giving the talk, and for all participants who shared their Wednesday evening with us. We look forward to what new and exciting topic next year’s FUNLight event will bring!
